Facial Sculpting With Advanced Dermal Fillers
Consult with Dr. Donn Chatham for an Individualized Approach to Facial Renewal
As we age, it is natural that our faces lose volume, our skin thins, bones shrink, lips thin, and wrinkles, lines and folds develop and then become more apparent. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Donn Chatham informs his patients that many of the common elements of facial aging can be improved with a variety of FDA-approved dermal fillers.
Non-surgical improvements in facial aging with advanced facial fillers have a long history of safety and effectiveness. Today, a variety of filler products can be used to sculpt your face to the individual patient’s desired anti-aging and facial improvement goals.
This Is Art Combined With Science
Think of adding facial volume as artistic facial sculpting, precisely performed using a number of safe and effective injectable facial fillers. Dermal filler injections are a safe, fast, and often an excellent option for turning back the visible signs of facial aging. While it’s not for the inexperienced practitioner, it is important that injectable fillers be administered by a competent experienced physician. An artistic appreciation of beauty and attractiveness combined with a careful unhurried administration produce the safest, most natural, and aesthetic results.

Other approved filler products include the RHA® Collection and Belotero Balance®, which use hyaluronic acid. Adults who are looking for non-surgical cosmetic enhancements can benefit from dermal filler treatments. Facial fillers can create a more youthful appearance or augment your facial features.
Who Can Benefit?
A younger patient may desire enhanced cheeks and or fuller lips. An older patient’s primary concern might be the marionette lines of the lower face or the receding temples. In other words, wise use of facial fillers is not focused on one age group but can help a wide variety of patients feel more confident by addressing their specific need.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
There is a wide variety of FDA-approved facial fillers that are used to rejuvenate a person’s face as well as a wide variety of facial areas than can benefit. The wide selection may be confusing for prospective patients to understand which filler is best for their goals.
To help explain the various types of fillers, Dr. Donn Chatham explains that there are several different categories of major active ingredient in the fillers. The three most common main ingredients in fillers includes hyaluronic acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite, and polylactic acid. These active products used in popular facial fillers have a history of safety and effectiveness to non-surgically refresh, re-volumize, and rejuvenate the face.

Real patient of Dr. ChathamHyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: Restylane®, Juvéderm®
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is used in the Restylane® Family of Products and the Juvéderm® Collection of Dermal Fillers. It is a natural substance found in your body. The various Restylane® and Juvéderm® dermal fillers can be used to soften and smooth:
- Moderate-to-severe creases in nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and frown lines
- Marionette and shadows from the corner of the mouth
- Some frown lines or furrows on the forehead
- Enhance lip volume and shape
- Improve appearance of acne scars
HA has a long safety record and has FDA approval for use in improving facial volume, softening lines, wrinkles, furrows and volumizing the lips. Lip enhancement is popular, and although lips are sensitive, typical sessions take seconds. Our goal is to help define and enhance lip structure, but not to create ‘big lips!’
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®)
Calcium hydroxylapatite is used in Radiesse® dermal fillers and is found naturally in human bones. It acts as a ‘bio filler’, by stimulating the production of collagen, although not a robust as Sculptra®.
Radiesse® is used to:
- Soften and smooth moderate-to-severe creases in nasolabial folds, marionette lines and frown lines
- Improve fullness and volume in the cheek area, jawline and for other facial contours
Calcium hydroxylapatite has a long history of safety and clinical effectiveness. There are no animals or animal products used so skin testing is required.
Polylactic Acid (Sculptra® Aesthetic)
Polylactic acid is a synthetic dermal filler that stimulates your body to produce collagen. Sculptra® Aesthetic is FDA-approved and long-lasting. Polylactic acid works particularly well in the midface and lower half of your face and is used to primarily add structure below the skin, a scaffolding similar to a carpet pad. By stimulating collagen to gradually grow beneath the skin surface, it step-by-step supports the soft tissue such as skin thus creating enhanced facial fullness. It mimics selective ‘weight gain’ but of course we cannot just gain weight in one area! Rather than producing an instantaneous enhancement like most other fillers, Sculptra® is injected over a several month period for optimal aesthetic control and the new collagen lasts longer than typical fillers.
- Cheeks and lower face
- Temple recession
- Jawline
What Facial Fillers Are Available At Chatham Facial Plastic Surgery?
During your consultation, Dr. Donn Chatham carefully selects the one or two fillers he believes to be most effective for each patient’s face, as well as most affordable. Improvements persist from 6 months to over a year, depending on filler type and area treated.
Dr. Chatham currently has a variety of facial fillers available at his two Chatham Facial Plastic Surgery locations, including:
Radiesse®
Radiesse® is used for adding deep structure to the cheeks and jawline and chin. We do not use it in lips or under eyes.
Restylane®
The Restylane® Family of Products are used to add support, soften wrinkles, soften deeper creases, and can be used superficially and deep. It is ideal for lips and sometimes can be very carefully used under the eyelids when shadows are deep. The various Restylane® products includes: Restylane-L®, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Kysse, Restylane® Refyne, Restylane® Defyne, Restylane® Contour, and Restylane® Eyelight.
Sculptra® Aesthetic
Sculptra® is used to restore and/or correct the signs of facial volume loss by carefully building and restoring volume usually in more than one specific area.
Belotero Balance®
Belotero Balance® is another excellent HA filler and is our filler of choice for more superficial fine wrinkles and superficial acne scars, as it has good color adaptability when used near the surface of the skin.
RHA® Collection
The RHA® Collection, which includes RHA Redensity™, offers excellent dynamic flexibility as well as structure especially in areas of the face with more movement.
“ I have had Sculptra injections for over 5 years. The Sculptra has been amazing for filling the fold lines and small facial lines. It has plumped my face slightly but not too extreme that it looks too puffy! Dr. Chatham has done a fabulous job at making my face look so natural. People tell me I look good but cannot say what looks different!”
