What is Earlobe Gauging?
Ear gauging is a type of earlobe piercing where earlobe is progressively enlarged for plug and tunnel jewelry. The earlobes will become elongated and at times tear.
Earlobe stretching is a popular body modification for people who are primarily under the age of 50. The goal is for the individual to progressively enlarge their earlobe piercings to accommodate popular styles of jewelry, including gauges, spacers, cogs, plugs, or tunnels which are designed to slowly expand the person’s earlobe. Unlike regular earrings, plug and tunnel jewelry actually creates noticeable holes in the earlobe. These holes range in size from small to large gaping holes and the earlobe hole will not close on its own.

How Do You Repair An Earlobe Stretched And Opened By Gauging?

Google ReviewDr. Donn Chatham explains to his ear gauge repair patients, that a surgical procedure is the solution to expertly repair the damaged earlobe and return it to a more normal appearance. Earlobes are skin and fatty tissue, with little to no cartilage. The strain on the earlobes from wearing gauges stretches the skin and weakens the lobule.
Depending upon the size of the hole, the surgical techniques may vary, and a specific plan will be designed for each person. The hole cannot simply be sutured back together as this will create an unnatural deformity. Rather, the precise removal of small areas of skin between torn or stretched earlobes is performed and then carefully sewn together on the front and back of the earlobe.
The earlobe repair is performed in the office and typically is completed in less than one hour. The earlobes typically heal in a few days. Discomfort is minimal. Dr. Chatham will discuss your recovery plan with you, and he provides his patients with detailed written post-op instructions on what to expect.
